Thanks for your patience.
Changed both username and password on both server and Android to JB. Found the server over Wi-Fi, but still no connection.
Tried changing connection name to JB on server. Still no connection. I cannot find a place to enter a connection name in BS3Beta on mthe Android.

Confirmed that there is only one user.
Confirmed that the Android does not appear under the list of sources on the Server.

I apologise if I was unclear. Yes, when trying to connect to TB8+BS3, I unticked the box labelled BirdieSync server 2.x.Y (Android BS cannot find the server unless this is unticked.). Thanks, that was helpful, but I am still not working properly. BS3beta, in BS2 mode, on my Android, will connect to TB31+BS2. However, BS3beta, in BS3 mode, will not connect to TB38+BS3. My current setup is Windows 10 (build 100074), TB 31 and BS2 - which all works fine using wifi to connect.
