ROM update

Post by giorgio »

Hi,

I would like to update the ROM on my phone. In order to avoid data loss (as well as data duplication) I would like to ask for your advice. The phone came with a backup utility, but I'm hesitant if I should use it. The ROM upgrade instructions are telling me that I should delete the partnership between my phone and my PC from WMDC beforehand, which means that I would have to create a new partnership after the ROM upgrade. I guess that in this case if I used the backup utility to restore the settings and contents of my phone, all data would be duplicated in TB/Lightning as Windows would think this was a new phone... is this right?

So should I simply do the ROM upgrade, establish a new partnership in WMDC, let BirdieSync load the calendar and address book entries onto the phone, and live with the fact that I would loose the rest of the data (e.g. SMS messsages) from the phone?

Thanks in advance.

Hello Giorgio,

If you update your ROM, it is highly recommended to delete the ActiveSync/WMDC partnership before synchronizing again. I am not sure at all that the backup tool would restore an identical state before the upgrade.

If the data on the mobile device and in Thundebird are identical (really identical) the duplicates should be automatically removed when you synchronize them or you can remove them with "Tools/BirdieSync/Remove duplicates...". But there is always a risk that these items will not be considered as real duplicates because of slight differences.

If you are on XP, you can choose the "Replace" option when you establish the new partnership so you will not have any duplicates since all your items will be replaced by your Thunderbird ones.
On Vista, you may set all your address books, calendars, mail folders in the synchronization way "From desktop to mobile device" in which case no items from the mobile device will be synchronized (launch the synchronization 2 times to erase the items present on the mobile device before the first synchronization). The set again the synchronization way "Both ways".

You can backup your SMS in Thunderbird if you synchronize them as mail folders (have a look at the documentation in the mail synchronization section).

And in any case, do backup your data with your backup tool or with PPCPimBackup.

The SMS sync feature is indeed very cool ;)

Thanks for your help, I managed to carry out the ROM update without loosing any data in the process.

However, I encountered a strange issue, and would like to ask if you had any idea what could have happened.

Since I was installing stuff anyway, I decided to upgrade BirdieSync as well to the latest version. Following the upgrade instructions, I uninstalled BirdieSync (Add/Remove programs), then opened Thunderbird again. At this stage I noticed that it was not only the BirdieSync add-on which was removed, but also Lightning, MoreFunctionsForAddressbook and ThunderBirthsday. I reinstalled these extensions and everything is fine, so I'm just curious...

As always, thanks for the prompt support.

Regards,

giorgio

Do you mean that the other extensions disappeared right after you uninstalled BirdieSync and BEFORE installing the new version ?

Yes, certainly after I uninstalled the old version and as far as I can remember before I installed the new one.

That's really weird. BirdieSync uninstaller relies on the mechanisms provided by Thunderbird to remove third-party add-on (not manually added) and doesn't do anything on its own. The BirdieSync extension is automatically removed by Thunderbird when restarted. I'm not sure to understand why it impacted the list of the other extensions.
