Could not install BirdieSync on Vista

Post by AndyH »

Hiho!
Installation aborts with this error:
The Microsoft Windows Mobile Device Center (WMDC) is not installed.
You must download it and install it before BirdieSync installation.
But WMDC is installed...

OS: Vista Ultimate x64 german

I wonder if the problem is not caused by the 64 bits version. BirdieSync was only tested on the 32 bits version of Vista. I am not sure it could run on a 64 bits version...

May I ask how you check if the WMDC is installed? Depending on the Version of installed applications, they get different positions registry and different locations in the directory tree (32-Bit Apps for example are installed in something like "Program Files 32")...

The version of the WMDC is defined in HKLM "SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Mobile Device Center"

Maybe (!) this is the problem - 32Bit-apps get under certain circumstances (as far as i know) a different subtree presented than 64Bit-Apps.

WMDC is installed in C:\Windows\WindowsMobile

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Mobile Device Center\6.0\Registration exists and contains:
DigitalProductID (REG_BINARY)
ProductID (REG_SZ)

I think that registry accesses under HKLM\SOFTWARE\ are redirected. Maybe you could try to install 32bits version of WMDC instead of 64 bits version.

Well, thank you, but I don't think you can do much for the moment. I think BirdieSync would require a specific adaptation and testing for Vista 64 bits since it would have to work with WMDC 64 bits...
