Windows Phone 7 or Android
Windows Phone 7 or Android
Hello,
a week ago I wrote an E-Mail to Birdiesync without receiving any answer. That is why I post my question here, maybe Birdiesync is more responsive here. That is my original question:
I am a user of your software for two years now and very happy with it.
For me it is essential to have a well-working Sync solution for Thunderbird and my phone.
As I am now looking for a replacement for the Windows Mobile 6.5 phone my question is, which way Birdiesync will follow.
Will you continue supporting Windows Mobile by switching to Windows Phone 7 or will you move to the Android platform or maybe both?
I think an announcement would make sense, because some users have to make buying decisions and everyone knows the 6.5 platform will die sooner or later.
Thanks for a response in advance and regards.

Re: Windows Phone 7 or Android
As you may understand, it's difficult to give you a definitive answer to this question. First, according to Microsoft, the Windows Mobile platform should still exist even if the new Windows Phone platform is released. But more information will be needed to see the kind of mobile devices which will support it.
The Windows Phone platform is a young platform and lacks a lot of technologies for developpers... Maybe the situation will evolve with new releases but I have no idea when this platform will be more "opened". If I would have to make a choice between the two (but it's not an official recommandation), I would rather go for the Android platform. But I cannot give you any official schedule regarding the support of Android platform. Sorry not being able to be more precise.

Re: Windows Phone 7 or Android
Thanks for this answer. Although I can understand the difficulty in communicating about running developments, I can hardly believe that at Birdiesync no one has already started thinking about a general strategy. WP7 may be young, but in many blogs you can find software announcements and already some videos of early versions of software from developers. Regarding Android, it is not in an early stage and there are many (unfortunately non-finished) sync solutions in the works. Windows Mobile is for sure no longer interesting for the mass market, which you aim at. Maybe you as a forum admin are not the right person to answer this question, but I kindly ask you to rise this topic to the responsible people who are able to answer.
So I do not understand why Birdiesync does not commit to a strategy, choosing the risk to loose customers that change the platform to something that is not supported in the future. On the one hand there is a forum where you can communicate your wishes, on the other hand there is no information flow in the direction of the customer, this is a bit unsatisfiying.
Sorry for my impatience, but I really like your product, that is why I am interested in further development. By the way: My personal favourite is Windows Phone 7, but I would go for Android if this is the future platform you support.

Re: Windows Phone 7 or Android
As I am going to move from WinMob devices to Android in near future I´m heavily interested in BirdieSync for Android as well .

...in a few weeks i change my WIn Mobile 6.5 Phone to a new Windows Phone 7, can anybody say if birdisync
supports this in the future ?
supports this in the future ?
Re: Windows Phone 7 or Android
The current version of Windows Phone 7 lacks technologies to allow the develoment of a new synchronization solution (network communications and access to contacts for instance). So by now, it seems not possible for BirdieSync to provide a solution for Windows Phone 7.
A version of BirdieSync for Android is in the pipe...

Very soon I hope, even if I suppose you'd have prefered a more precise answer.

Re: Windows Phone 7 or Android
A new version of BirdieSync 2.2.0.0 has just been released which offer contact synchronization for Android 2.x devices.
You must install BirdieSync 2.2.0.0 on the desktop and download BirdieSync on Android market place.

Re: Windows Phone 7 or Android
With the upcoming release of "Mango" for the WP7 platform, are there any new developments that would make it possible for WP7 to sync with Thunderbird by Birdiesync?
I'm about to switch phones and leave my trusty HD2/WM6 behind, but dont' really like the iPhone world, or the madness that goes around in Android phone land.....
thanks,
rob

Re: Windows Phone 7 or Android
