I would love to test this application out except it appears to only work with PocketPC's and not Smartphones

Any word as to whether or not a Smartphone client is in the works?

Actually, smartphone versions are already ready. But they can only work on "unlocked smartphones". They will likely be available shortly after the next version.

Here they are ! BirdieSync now supports smartphone version for both Windows mobile 2003 and 5.0.
You can test them from version 1.1.0.3
