Sync to iOS calendar

Post by KingTutt »

Hello Birdy,

searching in the forum I found your post regarding the synchronisation of BirdieSync to iOS calendar.
Birdy wrote:Hello x-ray,
Unfortunatelly BirdieSync only synchronizes contacts because the technologies provided by Apple have important limitations regarding the management of recurring events. Could you tell me if you would be interested in a solution in the future which would synchronize ONLY NOT RECURRING events ?
Thanks.
Do you know if this will be better with iOS version 5? I'm thinking about buying an iphone 5 if available but the most important thing in my smart phone is a calendar with all events from my desktop pc. Is there anything what could be done from our side to support you? Maybe it is possible to find a way around Apples limitations. I will as well talk to my colleague who is an App-Developer. Maybe he can tell me first what the limitations you are talking about are and how they can be avoided.

Appendix:
Hello again, I've just talked to my colleague and he could not imagine what this limitations could be. He said that Apple is using the standardized iCal format for events and as far as I know Lightning is using the same format. Could you point out some more details about the limitations you are talking about? I would like to help you to offer calendar support for iOS, too. We could as well talk via PM or EMail.

Kind Regards

Tutt,

I know I am not the man, but we are probably going to only be able to make assumptions until the phone is actually released. There are so many changes that go in to iphone app development as operating systems are upgraded that it can only be safe to make assumptions and envision that nothing at this point is concrete regarding the new iPhone5. That is at least the way that I look at it, do you have any kind of rebuttal because I would love to be able to predict the future, lol. It is crazy to me how my IT jobs description is always changing with the release of these new gadgets.

For the new iOS 5 you may be right, but it would be nice to have some more details. By college already has got the new iOS 5 (he's apple developer) but without knowing exactly the limitations birdy is talking of it is quite difficult to investigate for a solution...

Hello KingTutt,

Actually, maybe iOS can handle ICS calendar, but the API offered to developers to manage events is not "ICS oriented". The problem is that this API lack severe functionalities. It rather allows to manage recurring event occurrences individually than a whole series with all its linked modified or deleted exceptions. A bug was filled to Apple. They replied mentioning that they were aware of the problem. At least it confirms that there is a real problem with the API... Based on the changes I saw in SDK 5, I'm not sure that things will improve in this version. But maybe some workarounds will be used to try to overcome the limitations of iOS API. But this is still under study...

Can you provide the bug-number in Apples tracking system? I'd like to investigate a little bit more into this problematic and my college is now interested, too

Unless you are an Apple employee with an internal access to their issue tracking system, it would be of no use. Tickets are not public. :( For instance BirdieSync ticket was market duplicated of another issue. But it was impossible to access it...

My college is an Apple employee and has access to the issue tracking system. But without a number it is a little bit difficult to find the matching one (we've already searched a bit). If you don't want to post the bug-number here in public PM would be a good alternative I think.
