iPhone (cellular 3G connection)/laptop with internet dongle

Post by willhaben »

Hi!

I use BirdieSync 2.3.11.1, Thunderbird 11, an iPhone with cellular 3G connection and a laptop with an internet dongle. I get the message that it is impossible to connect to the host. Is it possible to use BirdieSync without wireless lan in the above mentioned setup?

Hello willhaben,

With iPhone, it's only possible to synchronize with a wireless connection and not a USB connection (it seems that Apple didn't provide the technology to developers to connect via USB and kept it for iTunes). So you may connect via Wi-Fi or 3G/cellular connection.
It's possible to connect via a 3G connection but it requires to have a WAN IP address and not a local IP address. So the IP address of your computer must be visible from the internet and so not begin with 192.168. The second requirement is that BirdieSync must be able to accept connections from the Internet. It means that your firewall must authorize BirdieSync to accept incoming connections and that if your computer is behind a router, you must translate BirdieSync port on the router to the PC.

Hello Birdy!

Thanks for your reply, I will try your solution. Maybe the firewall is still blocking something.

The problem I see is that the internet dongle will get a new WAN IP address each time the computer is rebooted. So I would have to change the IP each time I want to sync Thunderbird with the iPhone.

If your IP address change, your may use a "dynamic dns" provider (you may search on the Internet for one) to attach a fixed hostname to your dynamic IP address. Then you may enter this hostname in your address field in BirdieSync settings on the iPhone (note that local hostname don't work).
