New Windows Security Updates crash Birdiesync.exe

Post by renl60 » Wed Jan 14, 2015 10:57 pm

This morning, I installed the following Windows Security Updates on my x64 Windows 7 PC:

KB3019215
KB3019978
KB3021674
KB3022777
KB3023266

From then on, every time I tried to launch Birdiesync.exe (version 2.4.10.0), it crashed with a fatal error message.

Here is an excerpt from the log:

Local 2015-01-14 10:07:21::729 Operating system: id 2, version 6.1, SP 1.0
Local 2015-01-14 10:07:21::847 WARNING: ActiveSync is not installed on this machine (rapi.dll is missing) (GetLastError = 126)

Local 2015-01-14 10:07:27::345 Application is about to quit
Local 2015-01-14 10:07:27::345 Exiting application

I know that's the problem because afterward, I uninstalled all those Windows Updates, and now Birdiesync.exe runs properly again.

Unfortunately, I do NOT have the time to try to track down just which one (or more) of these five Updates is the culprit. Perhaps you can investigate that. I need to keep up with those Windows Security Updates, but I don't want to lose the functionality of Birdiesync.exe either.

Hello renl60,

> I know that's the problem because afterward, I uninstalled all those Windows Updates, and now Birdiesync.exe runs properly again.

This might be a possible a coincidence. The error may have solved for another reason (especially if you rebooted for instance).
I checked the content of these security updates but didn't find something specific that could explain this error (which doesn't exclude that they could have a possible influence). The security updates were installed on a Windows 8 machine (but not Windows 7) and the problem couldn't be reproduced.

The error you got is because the communication port usually used by BirdieSync was already in use and BirdieSync couldn't listen on this port. I think this kind of error could (rarely) happen if another application uses this port or if for some reason, the port was not properly released. So this error may not be necessarily linked to these security updates.

Maybe you could try to reinstall these security updates. And if you have the problem again try to reboot to see if it solves the problem. If it's still the case, it will be necessary to investigate and see why the port is still in use.

Well, this time I tried installing each of the five Windows Security Updates one at a time. (Most required a reboot; so I installed one, rebooted, installed another one, rebooted, etc.)

And this time, Birdiesync.exe launched properly. So I don't know what happened the last time. Perhaps installing all five Security Updates at once caused some funky bug.

So I guess everything's OK now.
