Looking forward to version 3... with lots of skepticism

Hi there,

I'm a very pleased user of BirdieSync for years now. Everything works fine until right now. Then Thunderbird 38 came and BirdieSync 2 wasn't working anymore. I came to your website and was excited to hear about a new version of BirdieSync. Version 3 will bring a new sync engine. I was so enthusiastic that I installed the recent beta version of BirdieSync 3 and (of course) Thunderbird 38.

What should I say? Oh my god!!! It was terrible... First of all I'd to fix this:

http://www.birdiesync.com/forum/viewtop ... f=8&t=2174

But when I opened Thunderbird I got everytime a red error message. I was closing this and Thunderbird started but... what was this? The setting up of the new version was extremely laborious. And further I got some bugs at syncing my contacts and the calender. So I gave it up.

I wanted to help as a beta tester to improve BirdieSync 3 but my regular business doesn't allow this. So I downgraded to Thunderbird 31 with BirdieSync 2 and everything works fine again. I know that a critical post like this is senseless without any facts. Sorry for that.

I don't know how I could participate to make BirdieSync 3 that good as version 2 was. So I can only express my hope that all this teething is fixed soon and a very good final is coming up.

P.S.: Sorry for my bad English... I did my very best! :)

Well, I'll reproduce the problems. First one at the installation:

On my system the UAC is turned off.

Hello Michavo,

Thank you for having taken the time to give a feedback. Is is valuable to see how this new version can be improved.

Regarding the installer problem:
On which Windows version are you running ?
Do you have a Windows administrator account or a restricted user account ?
This problem doesn't happen with BirdieSync 2.x installer ?

To avoid the password mismatch error, in the user edition window, labels will be changed in the next beta and a small explanatory text added to avoid any confusion.
when I opened Thunderbird I got everytime a red error message.
Which error message did you get ?
Where/how was this error message displayed ?
The setting up of the new version was extremely laborious.
The configuration way has changed between 2.x and 3.0. There are some new concepts introduced. Was it difficult to catch ? Badly explained ? Was the "Getting started" guide confusing ?
Did you have problems configuring synchronization the way you wanted ?
Could you give more details regarding your specific configuration ?
After a while, did the way to configure BirdieSync become clearer or not ?
Every comment is welcome.
I got some bugs at syncing my contacts and the calender.
Which kind of problems did you have ?
Which model of mobile device did you synchronize ?

Thanks.

Let's have a look on the installer error first. Okay?

I have Windows 7 Professional and an account with fully admin rights. With BirdieSync 2 I never got that error.

After the message I stopped installing BirdieSync, so we can look on the other problems when the installation works correctly, right?

Thanks for your help!

Is it important if it's 32 or 64-bit? My Windows 7 is 64-bit.

Should I resume installation although the error appears? Or should I wait?

I don't think the fact that 32 or 64 bits is important.
I investigated on this problem. It might occur at first installation and disappear in following installations. A fix is in progress.
If you complete the installation one time. Do you still have the error when you launch the installer a second time ?

You're right: On second time the error doesn't appear.

Now I've installed BirdieSync 3 and try to sync with it. After installing the addon on Thunderbird I get the red error message again:

Image

It's to wide to see the whole text. But I made it with Ctrl+A and Ctrl+C. ;)
So the full message is:
XML-Verarbeitungsfehler: Nicht definierte Entität
Adresse: chrome://birdiesync/content/Wizard.xul
Zeile Nr. 42, Spalte 3: <wizardpage style="overflow: hidden ;" pageid="connectionPreferencePageId" onpageshow="birdieSync.preference.checkPreferences() ;" description="&wizardPageConnection.description;" label="&wizardPageConnection.label;">
--^
This comes on EVERY start of Thunderbird.

This may be caused by a missing German translation. I sent you a Private Message with a new version to download. German translations were removed from this version. Let me know if it solves this issue.
Also the user configuration window in the server had its labels modified. Let me know if you think it's less confusing than initially.
Thanks.

You're completely right! No "red" error message anymore with this test version!

Have you any idea what the following error means? It comes only when I have the lightning calendar in foreground. Does it come from the Lightning addon?

By the way: If you ever need some help on translating BirdieSync to German, I could help you!

Good question... When you look at error console (menu Tools/Error console), do you see any error about this ?
I checked in BirdieSync but I don't think it displays such a message (you can disable BirdieSync add-on and restart Thunderbird to be sure).
I also found this message mentioned in old Mozilla bugs.
Has this message been there for a long time ?

Thanks a lot for the offer of translation ! It might be usefull after 3.0 is released.

The fix for the installer error message is in the pipe...

Yes, the JavaScript message has been for a long time, indeed. I also don't think that it has to do with BirdieSync.

Now i tested a lot with the version 3 and the more I work with it the better it is for me. :) No other errors until now than the stated ones here. I'll continue testing and of course report any issue.

When do you think will BS 3 final will be released? Is there still a lot of work to do?

That's good news !

Actually, it will depend on beta users feedback. That's why all your comments are important. If you ever have a specific problem, feel free to report it so that it can be addressed.

The new beta 7 includes the fixes regarding the user labels and the errors in the wizard or in the options.
The fix for the installer will be provided in the next release.

The error message "Cannot retrieve current session user" that you could got at first installation was fixed in beta 8. Actually, this was an old problem, already present in version 2.x, but less likely to happen.

Also you mentioned "bugs" when synchronizing contacts or events. If these problems are still reproducible with the latest betas, feel free to tell me about it.
Thanks.
