BirdieSync does not recognise Sync in Windows 7 RC1

Post by ecsedya »

Upon installation of BirdieSync under Windows 7 RC1, it states that I should install ActiveSync which I cannot as Windows 7 has it's own innate sync capability. I believe BirdieSync is simply not equipped to handle this operating system yet, but since I suspect the sync method is very similar to Vista's is there a fix or workaround? Should I run the installer in Vista compatibility mode? I don't want to experiment too much if there is a solution already...

Hello Aron,

It's possible to install and run BirdieSync on Windows 7 although no deep tests have been performed. Did you check if the Windows Mobile Device Center was installed ? This software should be automatically installed when you connect your mobile device. Can you manually launch the Windows Mobile Device Center with the" Start/All Programs/Windows Mobile Device Center" menu ? (not the "Sync Center" which is a different part of Windows)
Check also that the XP/Vista compatibility mode is not activated on BirdieSync installer.

Thanks! This was the solution... :) However conflict resolution does not seem to work (now it is set to pc->device only and it says that it could not refresh the data and conflict resolution is necessary - of course, there is no possibility for that anywhere).

Cheers,
Aron

I tried this too, but still won't sync. The mobile says there was an error syncing with Birdie Sync. On the PC, it sits at "Sync pending" forever. If I remove BirdieSync, syncs fine.

I am running the official release of Windows 7 64-bit.

Apparently, I also can't use Birdiesync on Win7 64bit. It works with the resolution problem on 32bit.

Can someone explain this line to me from the second post: "Check also that the XP/Vista compatibility mode is not activated on BirdieSync installer."

I've just installed a 32bit version of Windows 7 and I'm desperately trying to get Birdiesync up and running again. The problem I am having is that after I connect my mobile to my PC, the Windows Mobile Device Center states that I am connected but nothing happens in terms of syncing, it just says Connected and nothing else.

So, I'm curious about that line since it might mean a working Birdiesync as opposed to a non working one.\

And out of curiosity, does the current version support Win7 or am I simply just pressing my luck in the hopes that it works?

Thanks for the help.

Hello srr,

If you open the properties of BirdieSync setup file and then look at the "Compatibility" tab, you should check that "Run this program in compatibility mode..." is not selected (this can happen if you answered "No" to the question "Did this program installed correctly ?" at the end of an installation: Windows tries to use a "compatibility mode" hoping that next time the installation will succeed).

To answer your other question, BirdieSync should work on Windows 7. After having closed Thunderbird/Sunbird, disconnected, reconnected your mobile device and waited for the end of the synchronization, could you send your logs with the Thunderbird/Sunbird menu "Tools/BirdieSync/Archive logs..." to support(at)birdiesync.com ?
Thanks.

Thanks Birdy, but in there lies the problem. I don't have any sort of synchronization happening. I will send the logs regardless to the address suplied since I do see other errors in there that may give you an indication of what is happening.

To recap, here is what I did.

1) I uninstalled birdiesync from both the pc and the mobile
2) Re-downloaded a fresh copy of the setup file
3) Checked to make sure there was checkmark in the 'compatibility box'
4) Re-installed birdiesync on pc and mobile
5) Closed both thunderbird and WMDC applications and disconnected the mobile
6) Re-connected the mobile and ... no sync. Launched thunderbird and ... no sync. In both cases the WMDC application only shows that the mobile is connected and that is all.

From what I recall, on my wifes PC which was running XP, if thuderbird wasn't open, connecting the mobile would launch thunderbird and start the sync. Should I still see the same behaviour on Win7? Just a curiosity question, that one.

The logs will be sent in an email titled SRR Logs so that you may know what they are referencing.

And in passing, I am seeing the same occurence on both my laptop (Win7 64 bit) and my wifes PC (Win7 32 bit) if that makes any difference whatsoever.

Thanks!

I checked out the logs. It seems that BirdieSync mobile device part has never been loaded for some reason. Your mobile device is a smartphone but from what I saw in the logs, it seems "application unlocked" (which is usually not the case of smartphone). But when you install BirdieSync for the first time, you should have seen a window on the mobile device asking you to authorize the execution of DeviceProvider.dll. If you don't answer yes to this question, BirdieSync mobile device part will never be loaded. Did you answer yes to this question ?
Could you try to soft reset (reboot) your mobile device ?
Then reconnect your mobile device.
Do you see this question again on the mobile device ?
Does the connection now succeed ?
If not, could you send me the logs again ?
Thanks?

I apologize for not stating that earlier, the bit about my mobile being a smartphone. I have the Motorola Q any my wife has the Treo 700wx.

And the answer to your questions:

- DeviceProvider.dll. If you don't answer yes to this question, BirdieSync mobile device part will never be loaded. Did you answer yes to this question ?
No, because on neither mobile was I asked about DeviceProvider.dll. It asked me to confirm the installation of CliciaBirdiesync.cab but that was all.

- Could you try to soft reset (reboot) your mobile device ? Then reconnect your mobile device. Do you see this question again on the mobile device ?
No question shows up.

- Does the connection now succeed ? If not, could you send me the logs again ?
No, same as before. Logs are being sent now.

I've been using BirdieSync just fine on 64bit Windows 7 for months going back to the RC and now on the RTM version.

@srr: I forgot to ask you that but did you set up the partnership after having connected your mobile device for the first time ? Did you select "cards, events, tasks or mails" in the WMDC ?

@ctash: Just for my own information, is Outlook installed on your machine ?

Not in WMDC but when I launched Thunderbird after installing Birdiesync I did. In WMDC I can only see options of adding Outlook specifc Contacts/Tasks/etc ... nothing for Thunderbirds Cards/Events/etc

*edit*
I just checked WMDC and saw the scroll bar ...
I feel just a bit silly now.
The sync has finally started, I will let you know if it succeeds.

There is something weird. You said "I've just installed a 32bit version of Windows 7". Could you confirm that you have a 32 bits version ? Because BirdieSync registry settings are as if you had a 64 bits version ? (C:\Program Files (x86) in all the paths)

I have both, a 64bit install on my laptop and a 32bit install on my wife's PC.

But there is good news, I have both mobiles syncing with their respective computers and all is good. Except for one annoyance that I'm trying to resolve which has nothing to do with Birdiesync but rather with WMDC complaining about not having a default mail program installed. I tried fixing that in control panel but no luck.

At least I have things syncing now. Thanks for your help.
