@Dieter:

There is a problem with the log archiver if a log archive didn't previously exist before creating a new one, the log archive exists without generating a new one. To workaround the problem, create a dummy file called BirdieSyncLog.zip in the folder where the log archive is saved. Then launch the log archiver again. An updated beta version will be delivered soon to fix this problem.

Do you have a firewall ? Which one ? What if you disable it and then reconnect your mobile device ? Check also that the process "BirdieSync.exe" is running on your PDA.
Thanks.

A version "b" of the beta has just been released. It fixes the installer problem (incorrect report of an error when installing the mobile device part) and allows to generate log archives.

:D it works now!
After installing your new Beta c and disabling my firewall all worked well.
My firewall "Agnitum Outpost Version 6.71.2983.450.0714" is now configured well.
Thanks Birdy

In response to the request for what I saw as my problem....

On an HTC Touch Pro on Sprint:

In syncing over contacts, the new version of BirdieSync saw 5 unspecified "errors" with the contacts. The only option it gave was to "delete" the error, and doing so, of course, deleted the contact from both the address book on Thunderbird and on the device (I'd recommend against this ever being an option, I think)... I allowed it to do this to two of the contacts before giving up on that...

I used Microsoft MyPhone (very handy BTW) to restore all my contacts on my phone to an earlier state. One thing that this forces me to do is respecify all my "Favorites" that appear on the HTC Touch Pro's quick contact screen, which I realized were the 5 it was having problems with. Again, I attempted to resync with the new BirdieSync, and it had the same unspecified error with those 5 contacts, so I removed them from the phone's Favorites, and tried to resync again. This time, just the two accounts that I'd actually allowed BirdieSync to delete errored out again as unspecified "errors" but it did so in the process of attempting to "Create" them in the Thunderbird address book.

That was all I had time for last night.

@tgaastra:

You mentioned in the other thread "It managed to hash up and delete about half my contacts on its first pass, backups were necessary." I primary thought that you had lost half of all your contacts in the first synchronization. But from I understood in your previous description, it seems that you rather had problems with 5 unresolved items and you deleted 2 choosing the "Delete item" option in the "Unresolved items" view. Am I correct or did I miss something ?

Regarding the "Delete item" option in the "Unresolved item", a confirmation window will be added in next version to warn the user about the deletion. I still think that the option to delete the unresolved items is useful since the case happened in the past where the items that could not be synchronized could never be found in the GUI... So that could be an easy and quick way to get rid of this items. But a confirmation window even if it slows the process down would be a good way to avoid mistakes. In the future, some common cases should be fixable so you'll not have only the option to delete the problematic items.

I tried to reproduce your problem regarding the favorite contacts but didn't succeed to get unresolved items. If you had photos attached to these contacts that may explain the unresolved items (a problem was fixed in version d). Do you still have problems with these contacts with version d ? If yes, could you send your logs with "Tools/BirdieSync/Archive logs..." in Thunderbird menu to support(at)birdiesync.com ?
Thanks.

Hi Birdy

First of all, congratulations on the launch of the Beta for 2. Fantastic!

Am having trouble.
Options in BirdieSync are inactive. The window opens but none of the dialogs open. Specifically the list dialog for timezone selection of the current profile will not work. The radio button for lightning sunbird is default at sunbird, I am using lightning.
Other tabs/area in options also do not work, i.e. I cannot select user profile to synchronise.
This is preventing synchronisation, and the BirdieSync connection console says Thunderbird profile is not selected.
The help button in this dialog does not work.
I cannot select the Thunderbird directory.
If I go to TB Tools BirdieSync ArchiveLogs there is no response
I previously had TB2 on this machine and now is TB3RC
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-GB; rv:1.9.1.5) Gecko/20091130 Lightning/1.0b1pre Thunderbird/3.0
I had three calenders in TB2, "home" , a google calender, and Thunderbirthday. I have had to unsubscribe to the last two at this point.

Also I had the fault with "Advanced Network Functionality" being turned on for the mobile device, I turned it off and had to go to ActiveSync to manually find the mobile device. OK now.

Any thoughts?

thanks in advance

I note the original install of BS went to the D: partition on this machine, so I reinstalled BirdieSync on C:, but still no joy.

I found the following log files, hope they help

And this log out of the Error Console in TB, expanded

var birdieSync = window.birdieSync || {} ;

birdieSync.main = function()

this.externalService = Components.classes["@mozilla.org/ExternalService;1"].createInstance(Components.interfaces.IExternalService) ;
var result = this.externalService.initialize() ;

Hello Billy Will,

When you have a strange behavior in BirdieSync options (menus and lists are not filled for instance), it generally means that BirdieSync could not properly initialize in Thundebird/Sunbird. Could you open BirdieSync options in Thunderbird then send the logs with "Tools/BirdieSync/Archive logs..." to support(at)birdiesync.com.
Thanks.

Sorry, got rather busy with work in the early part of this week so I didn't have time to experiment, but I put beta f on today and tried a sync and it seems to have worked just fine. Contacts synced over fine this time, including the pictures which I believe didn't before. As for a confirmation dialogue, I think that would be a good idea. I still don't see how it should ever try to delete both contacts on the phone and address book if it can see both and thinks they're the same item... For real world use I'm not sure how that would ever be something you want to do... I think I'd rather have entries on my phone that never could sync rather than something that just got rid of them to "make it work right"... Maybe you could just add a function for "ignore this entry from now on"?

Of course, I backed up with MyPhone before trying today. It also updated to a new version. Do you ever see BirdieSync able to connect to MyPhone's online calendar to do "over-the-air" synchronization with Thunderbird? Or is that another program's niche?

Also, Thunderbird went 3.0 official today, though Lightning is still beta... Seems like a busy day in the desktop software world.
