Portable Thunderbird/Lightning

Post by hwfa »

I'd like to use BirdieSync to sync my iPhone's calendar to Thunderbird/Lightning. I saw a conversation, from some time ago, in this forum that BirdiSync can now recognise Portable TB/Lightning. That's great but I'm a bit confused: it seems that BirdieSync is *not* portable (or is that wrong?). If that's right then the minute I take my portable TB/Lightning on the road, I lose the ability to sync because I can't take BirdieSync on the road with me. What am I missing, please?

Hello hwfa,

BirdieSync can easily work with portable version of Thunderbird (it can starts Thunderbird on a USB key and access to its stored profile). But BirdieSync is not portable itself. Some data needs to be stored on the computer.
It would be necessary to modify BirdieSync to give it the possibility to become portable. Could be something to consider in the future.

Birdy,

Thanks for that but I'm still confused. What is the point of BirdieSync being able to work with portable TB/Lightning if it is not itself portable? If you can't take BirdieSync with you, then you can't sync while on the road, which I thought was the point of *portable*.

I understand your point. For historical reason, BirdieSync installation had to be linked to a specific machine. BirdieSync was relying on Microsoft ActiveSync at first before having its own synchronization engine. And ActiveSync was not portable (partnership data was stored on the machine). BirdieSync can start Thunderbird if it's not running even it's located on a USB key (with a drive letter which can change). So portable version are managed as classical version. But I agree that it would be better to have BirdieSync portable so you can have BirdieSync and Thunderbird on the same USB key and not have to synchronize on the specific machine where BirdieSync is installed. Maybe this will possible in the future.
